Responding to Hate with Hope

Dear IHMEC Community:

I write to you today with a heavy heart.

Yesterday’s tragic attack at the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, DC—where two lives were senselessly taken—is a devastating reminder of the continued presence of antisemitism and hate in our society. Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and the entire museum community in Washington. We mourn with them and stand in solidarity during this painful time.

I want to speak directly to each of you—our Board, our team, and our volunteers.

First and foremost, I want to assure you that your safety and well-being are—and will always be—our highest priority. We work closely with law enforcement and security professionals, continually reviewing and strengthening our safety protocols.

We are in constant coordination with state and local law enforcement, including all through this morning.  And at least today, you will notice increased visible presence of law enforcement outside of our building.  We remain vigilant so that this museum remains not only a place of remembrance and education, but also a sanctuary of dignity and peace.

The fact that such violence occurred at a museum—an institution dedicated to preserving history and promoting understanding—deepens the sorrow we feel. It also strengthens our resolve. We were founded in the shadow of atrocity, and we exist to stand against hate, discrimination, and violence.

Let us be clear: antisemitism, racism, and hatred of any kind have no place here or anywhere. In the face of fear and division, we choose courage and unity. We will continue to welcome all people with open arms, to teach the lessons of the Holocaust, and to stand as a beacon against hatred.

If you want to view or share the Museum’s public comment, you can find it on InstagramLinkedInFacebook, or X/Twitter.

Thank you for your hard work and dedication.  Together, we reaffirm our mission—and our commitment—to building a world where such tragedies are not only mourned, but not repeated.

Yours,

Bernard Cherkasov, Chief Executive Officer
