Virtual Program: The Consequences of Evil: Genocide in Darfur

February 28, 2023 | 3:30pm CDT

Virtual

For Grades 7-12

It has been 20 years since the start of the first genocide of the 21st century in Darfur, Sudan where 200,000 members of the Fur, Zaghawa, and Masalit ethnic groups were murdered and approximately two million people displaced. In 2004, the U.S. government recognized these atrocities as genocide and resulted in the creation “Students Taking Action Now: Darfur (STAND), the fastest growing student movement for international human rights issues since anti-apartheid. Due to the large public outcry, for the first time, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Former President of Sudan Omar Al-Bashir for genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes in Darfur and Sudan. This marks a major turn in prosecuting heads-of-state for committing atrocities against their own people. However, these atrocities continue to impact the Darfur community today. Educators will examine this multifaceted history, investigate why and how these atrocities occurred as well as take a closer look at student activism and how grassroots organizing impacted the international response. Participants will come away with primary sources and testimony that they can bring back to the classroom for students to engage deeply with this tragic history.

Workshop Includes:
