Virtual: Teaching about the Asian American Experience: A Primer
With the 2021 historic passage of the TEAACH Act that requires K-12 grade IL schools to deliver Asian American history, it is important for teachers – many who have little awareness or knowledge about the Asian American community and its history – to include them in ways that are respectful, authentic, and centering.
This two-hour PD led by Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Chicago prepares educators to include Asian American history, stories and voices in 6-12 grade classrooms by introducing historical background and model a lesson excerpt with teaching tools that center the Asian American experience.
Attendees will learn about:
- why including the Asian American experience in teaching is important
- the diversity of the Asian American community nationally and in Illinois
- anti-Asian stereotypes throughout history and today
- Asian Americans fighting for racial justice with other communities of color
- how to use the Asian American Education Resource Database
Presented in partnership with Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Chicago
