They Shall Be Counted: The Theresienstadt Ghetto Art of Erich Lichtblau-Leskly (Grades 7+)

Virtual Docent-Led Field Trip

As a prisoner during the Holocaust, artist Erich Lichtblau-Leskly created stunning and sardonic colored pencil drawings that depict day-to-day life in Theresienstadt, the Nazi’s ‘show’ ghetto. Through the lens of Leskly’s artwork, explore this pictorial diary chronicling both the daily life of ghetto prisoners in conditions imposed by both Nazi officials and German-appointed Jewish leadership and the importance of humor as a vehicle for endurance during the Holocaust. Students will be challenged to explore Leskly’s story and think critically about art as a form of resistance and witness to history.

Virtual Field Trip Includes:

  • Live, Docent-led virtual tour
  • Meaningful discussion and reflection questions
