Who Should Apply?

Core subject teachers for grades 7 - 12 and community college educators may apply. Priority will be given to social studies and English/language arts teachers.

What Will Teachers Accomplish During the Summer Institute?

• Master how to approach the subjects of Holocaust and genocide education with sensitivity, knowledge of the history, precise language and definitions, and the use of specific teaching strategies and methodologies.
• Learn how to present the history of the Holocaust, genocide, and human rights in a way that helps students understand the implications of man's continued inhumanity to man.
• Enhance the relevance of the subject matter they teach to the student's natural interests and questions, increasing student engagement.
• Increase pedagogical knowledge and strategies needed to create students who do not merely learn history, but also challenge, interpret, and create their own conclusions about the world around them.

What Is Provided for Summer Institute Educators?

During the Institutes:

• Behind-the-scenes experiences at the Museum
• Print materials and resources including scholarly literature and teaching guidelines and strategies
• Opportunities to engage with leading scholars and experts
• Daily breakfast and lunch
• CPDUs and graduate credit through Aurora University (graduate credit not available to educators participating the Advanced Holocaust Studies Seminar)

Throughout the year:

• Connection to a network of Institute alumni
• Museum staff support for curriculum development

What Is Expected of Summer Institute Educators?

• Completion of pre-Institute assignments
• Participation in the entire Institute; punctuality is essential
• Contribution of ideas, comments, and resources during the Institute

Application Process

Applications are due Monday, June 18, 2012 for consideration. Participants are chosen on a rolling basis by a selection committee.

In order to provide all teachers with the opportunity to participate, IHMEC heavily subsidizes the cost of the Institutes. Please reference our tips for funding your professional development.

Participants pay the reduced tuition of $400 per week upon receipt of acceptance letter. (Aurora University tuition is additional.)

Tuition Scholarships: A limited number of full-tuition scholarships are available to CPS teachers through the support of Polk Bros. Foundation and to Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Wisconsin educators through State Farm. See bottom of page for details.

Withdrawal/Refund Policy

To cover the cost of application processing, Institute materials, and pre-readings, the Museum will refund tuition amounts based on the following cancellation deadlines:

• Before June 18: Full tuition less $25 processing fee
• June 18-30: 50% refund of tuition
• July 1 or later: No refund granted

Scholarship Application

Full-tuition scholarships are available for Chicago public and magnet school educators through the generous support of Polk Bros. Foundation and to Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Wisconsin educators through State Farm.  Scholarships subsidize the entire cost of the Institute. To apply for a scholarship, please submit a statement of need and why you wish to attend our Institute. Letters must be written on school or district letterhead with an original signature.

A thank you letter must be provided within 7 days of completing the Institute.

For participants coming from out-of-country, out-of-state, or other far distances, we recommend staying at the Hampton Inn & Suites North Shore/Skokie. Call 847.583.1111 to reserve a room, and mention you are staying for the IHMEC Summer Institutes. The Hampton is walking distance from the Museum and provides breakfast daily.
