Frequently Asked Questions
Who will be leading my students around the Museum?
Most field trips are guided by a well-trained, volunteer Museum docent. For students in grades 7-12, there is a field trip option from 1pm-3pm that is “self-guided” (led by teachers and chaperones at their discretion).
Can my students hear a speaker during our visit?
Yes, we will try to offer all students in grades 6-12 the opportunity to hear from a survivor or eyewitness during their field trip whenever possible. While we will do our best to include a speaker as part of your scheduled field trip, we cannot make any guarantees.
The self-guided tour (Option A5) does not include a presentation from our Speakers' Bureau. However, the stories of our local survivors are woven throughout the Karkomi Permanent Exhibition through videos and artifacts.
Younger visitors in grades 3-6 will have the opportunities to hear age-appropriate testimonies in the "Survivor Stories" section of Make a Difference: The Miller Family Youth Exhibition.
My school cannot afford a field trip. Can you help?
Yes, IHMEC is pleased to be able to offer Opportunity Grants to subsidize the cost of transportation and Museum admission to qualified Illinois schools for the 2009-2010 school year.
After I receive a confirmation letter, what should I do to prepare for my field trip?
Please thoroughly read and review our Pre-Visit Packet, which will be e-mailed to you along with your field trip confirmation (10-15 business days after registering). This packet contains vital information and instructions regarding your students’ visit.
