Docent Training

MUSEUM DOCENT CORPS

PLEASE NOTE: We are not currently accepting docent applications. To learn more about Visitor Services volunteer opportunities, or to add your name to the list for future docent cohorts, please email our Visitor Services and Volunteer Programs Coordinator.

Inaugural Docent Corps - Evening ClassDocents conduct tours of the Museum for groups of children and adults. Utilizing the techniques of dialogue and inquiry, the docents encourage students to explore the exhibitions of the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center. Each tour program is two to four hours in length.

New docent trainees attend our two-week Summer Institutes on teaching the Holocaust, genocide, and human rights, as well as tour technique training. Docents shadow experienced veteran docents before being assessed by an IHMEC staff member.

IHMEC also offers continuing education and ongoing trainings, which focus on tour strategies and exhibition content.

Like all Museum volunteers, docents must maintain a valid Museum membership.

Inaugural Docent Corps

IHMEC Inaugural Docent Celebration CakeCongratulations to the first cohort of IHMEC docents, who completed a 20-week docent training program and are now working in the Museum. These docents lead school field trips and adult groups through each of the Museum exhibitions.

Thank you to everyone who is dedicating enormous time and effort to being a docent for the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center.
