2010 Student Arts & Writing Contest

2010 Leo & Antonia Gershanov Memorial Holocaust Essay Contest
"One Person Can Make a Difference: Eliminating Genocide in My Lifetime"

The biennial Gershanov Family Student Essay Contest offers Illinois high school students (grades 9 through 12) an opportunity to respond to a theme that links historical and current events to their contemporary experience.

In an essay no longer than 1,200 words and meeting all contest requirements, students should consider the impact of their own individual effort on the world stage.  In particular, students should seek to answer such questions as:

  • How will you act to eliminate genocide in your lifetime?
  • What will you do?
  • What steps will you take?
  • What will you set in motion?

  • For complete contest details and entry guidelines click here.
  • Students may find What Can You Do to Respond to Genocide to be of assistance in preparing their essays.
  • Contest entries will be accepted via electronic submission only.  Deadline for all entries is March 1, 2010. 
  • Winners will be notified after April 16, 2010.
  • As stated in the contest requirements, the preferred format is Microsoft Word [.doc], in a standard font [e.g., Times] and point size [12 pt.], with one inch margins.
